Valentine’s Day card and holiday history.
In the United States, Valentine’s Day began being celebrated in 1777, which was later than in Europe. Early in the last century, Americans started to gift marzipans to their brides, but marzipan contained sugar and that was very expensive in those times. This custom became more popular after the sugar beet usage was more widely spread in 1800.
The production of Valentine’s Day candies has changed in the US. Love words were scribbled on candies and colored red and white. The color red meant passion, and white was purity of love. In the fifties, Valentine’s Day candies started to be packed in heart-shaped cardboard boxes.
